Fuerteventura 2016 Training Camp

Fuerteventura 2016 Training Camp

13 intrepid swimmers along with Carla McWilliams and Graham headed off from Carlisle on Saturday 13 Feb for a week’s TRAINING CAMP. The journey to Glasgow and the flight passed without incident once the swimmers (or their parents!) had learnt what was allowed through airport security.

The venue was the Oasis Papagayo in Corralejo which was basically a hotel that had its own 7 lane 50m pool. The accommodation was good for the purpose and the pool was excellent and warm. Carlisle were joined by 4 British, 3 French, 1 Danish and a German swimming clubs. Also there was the Austrian Modern Pentathlon Olympic Team.

After settling into their rooms the swimmers had a nice steady session on the Saturday evening before dinner at the hotel. The food was the usual “Spanish hotel buffet” and I hope that everyone found some food to their liking.

On the Sunday they had the novel experience of training under floodlights as we started at 0700 and the sun did not make an appearance until about 7-45am. After breakfast we tried one of the hotel’s abs classes however I did feel that this was disappointing, an email has gone off! Lunch, rest and more training preceded Dinner then a well-earned sleep.

On the Wednesday we tried something different from last year. The afternoon session was cut short to involve a warm up and then a timed 200m swim. After this we walked down to the beach for a paddle in the Atlantic, followed by dinner out at a local pizzeria. This made a nice break in the week.

Thursday evening saw the 10 pin bowling competition which Zara won.

The swimmers worked extremely hard in the water and their behaviour around the hotel was exemplary. One of the stewardesses on the flight home was on our outbound flight and she described our group a “lovely”.

Many thanks to Carla for acting as Team Manager, enabling this to go ahead. If this is to continue the Club needs parents to volunteer to act as Team Manager (basically being a parent to other people’s children). The venue I would like to use next year will be booked up for February half term soon if not already so please get volunteering!
