European Masters Championship 25-29 May 2016

European Masters Championship 25-29 May 2016:
Three members of Carlisle Aquatics joined 10,000 other swimmers to compete in what is probably the swim meet with the most competitors ever! It was held at The London Aquatic Centre, venue of the 2012 Olympic swimming competition. The pool is a magnificent building and facility although the organisers did struggle to cope with the number of swimmers. For example on the fourth day of competition there were 6000 swims, caused in no small part by the Men’s 100m Freestyle having 199 heats, in a 10 lane pool! As there were so many swimmers wanting to compete swimmers were restricted to three events instead of the usual five at this level.

Carlisle’s results were:
Paul Nicholson swimming in the 55-59 Age Group was placed 52nd in the 50m Butterfly in a time of 34.71s and was 47th in the 50m freestyle in 30.45s. Both long course PBs for him.
Graham Pearson competing in Breaststroke events in the 60-64 Age Group was placed 9th in the 50m (36.91); 5th in the 100m (1:22.10) and 2nd in the 200m (3:00.92).
Judy Hattle swam the Butterfly events in the 55-59 category, her results being 50m 1st (32.90); 100m 2nd (1:13.04 and in the 200m she won in a time of 2:49.76, 26s ahead of her nearest rival.

For those of you with longer memories there were also two former Carlisle swimmers competing. Matthew Nicholson swam the same events as his dad, but in the 25-29 Age Group, coming 8th in 50m Butterfly (25.93) and 18th in the 50m Freestyle (25.06). Fiona King (nee Little) swam in the 30 – 34 category, her name still appears in the Club records as she holds the club 100m Breaststroke record. Her results were 50m 20th (37.70) 100m 13th (1:21.98) and 200m 8th (2:55.52), all Breaststroke.
